We recommend that you start with one of the four Free Landscape Plans for Your Home. If your landscaper is not sure where to obtain the plans direct him to Plant Survey below. Almost all the plants are available at local nurseries.
Soils are very poor in Sun City. Make sure that the landscaper, or if you do it yourself, adds a soil amendment. Soil amendments, like composted pine bark and mushroom compost, can be added at planting to improve soil structure, texture, moisture holding capacity in sandy soil and will help to loosen clay soils. These are found at any garden center.
We also recommend that you get a soil test. Clemson extension provides soil tests for $10, but you must deliver the soil to their office at 16 John Galt Rd, Beaufort. If you cannot get the soil test to Beaufort, contact firstname.lastname@example.org for assistance. For directions for taking a soil test go to https://hgic.clemson.edu/factsheet/soil-testing/
It is very important that 70% of your plants be native plants. Recent research has shown that suburban yards with less than 70% native plants will not support breeding birds.
